How Much Does a Website Cost for a Small Business in South Africa?

Website quotes in South Africa vary wildly for what looks like the same thing. Here's what actually drives the number, and what to check before you agree to anything.

The short answer

For a small South African business, a simple, well-built brochure website typically sits in the low thousands of rand. A larger multi-page site with more custom design and content work costs more, and an online store more again because of the payment, delivery and product setup involved. Our own packages start at R1 999 — you can see the full range on our pricing page.

The wide spread in quotes usually isn't dishonesty. It's that "a website" describes anything from a single templated page to a fully custom build with content strategy, SEO setup and e-commerce.

What actually drives the price

  • Number of pages. Each page needs layout, content and mobile testing. Five focused pages cost meaningfully less than twenty.
  • Custom design vs template. A design built around your brand takes longer than dropping your logo into an existing theme — and looks it, in both directions.
  • Content. If you supply text and photos, the build is quicker. If the copy has to be written and images sourced or shot, that's real work with a real cost.
  • Functionality. Enquiry forms are standard. Bookings, payments, member logins, calculators and integrations each add scope.
  • E-commerce. Products, variants, stock, delivery rules and a payment gateway add setup work that a brochure site simply doesn't have.
  • SEO groundwork. Titles, descriptions, headings, alt text, structured data and a sitemap should be included. If a quote is silent on this, ask.

The costs people forget

  • Domain: a modest annual fee for your .co.za or .com name.
  • Hosting: monthly or annual, sometimes bundled into a care plan.
  • Business email: if you want name@yourbusiness.co.za rather than Gmail.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and content changes after launch.
  • Photography: often the single biggest difference between a site that looks premium and one that doesn't.

How to compare quotes fairly

Ask every provider the same five questions:

  • How many pages, and what happens if we need one more?
  • Who owns the domain, hosting account and website files?
  • Is on-page SEO included, and does that include structured data and a sitemap?
  • What does a content change cost after launch, and what's the turnaround?
  • Is this a fixed price or an estimate?

Answers to those five will explain most of the difference between a R2 000 quote and a R20 000 one.

Is the cheapest option a false economy?

Sometimes, yes. A site that loads slowly, reads generically and can't be found on Google costs little upfront and produces little in return. But the opposite mistake is just as common: paying for complexity a small business will never use. The right spend is the smallest one that gets you a credible, fast, findable site with a clear route to contact you — then investing further once it's demonstrably bringing in work.
